20 Mins Ham & Cheese French Toast Rolls

If you love ham and cheese toasties but want something a little more fun (and way more snackable), these air fryer ham and cheese rolls are for you.

They’re crispy on the outside, soft and savoury inside, and filled with gooey melted mozzarella and shredded ham. Once coated in egg and air fried, they turn golden and slightly crunchy — almost like a savoury French toast roll-up.

They’re perfect for breakfast, lunchboxes, lazy dinners, or late-night cravings. And honestly? They look impressive but are ridiculously easy to make.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (4 rolls)

  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 1 cup shredded ham
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • Oil spray (for coating before air frying)

Optional

  • 1/4tsp black pepper
  • 1tbsp chopped spring onions
  • 1tbsp grated parmesan

Instructions

1. Prepare the bread

Lay 4 slices white sandwich bread on a clean chopping board.

Using a rolling pin (or a bottle if you don’t have one), gently flatten each slice until slightly thinner. This makes them easier to roll and helps prevent cracking.

If the bread feels dry and cracks when rolling, lightly sprinkle both sides with a little water, especially around the edges. Don’t soak the bread — just a light sprinkle. Too much water will make it soggy instead of flexible.

2. Add the filling

Place about 1/4 cup shredded ham and 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese in the centre of each slice. Don’t overfill. Too much cheese will leak out during cooking.

Keep the filling slightly away from the edges so it doesn’t spill out when rolling.

If using, sprinkle a pinch of black pepper or some chopped spring onions over the filling.

3. Roll and secure

Carefully roll each slice tightly from one end to the other, forming a log shape.

Insert toothpicks into both ends of the roll (left and right sides) to secure the seam so it doesn’t open during cooking.

4. Prepare the egg coating

Crack 4 eggs into a bowl and whisk until slightly frothy. Roll each bread log in the egg mixture, making sure it is fully coated on all sides.

Let the excess egg drip off before placing into the air fryer. Too much egg can pool at the bottom.

5. Air fry

Place the egg-coated rolls into the basket in a single layer. Spray the tops lightly with oil. Air fry at 180°C for 10 minutes, flipping halfway at the 5-minute mark, until golden brown and crispy.

Every air fryer is different. If they’re not golden enough after 10 minutes, add another 1–2 minutes.

6. Cool and serve

Remove the rolls carefully and let them cool for 2–3 minutes.

Remove the toothpicks before serving. Slice in half if you want that beautiful cheese-pull moment.

Extra Tips

1. Flavour boost

Add 1tbsp grated parmesan into the 1 cup shredded mozzarella for extra savoury flavour.

2. Spice kick

Add 1/2tsp chilli flakes into the 1 cup shredded ham for gentle heat.

3. Garlic twist

Mix 1/4tsp garlic powder into the 4 eggs before coating for subtle garlic flavour.

4. Extra crispy

Brush 1tsp melted butter over the rolls before air frying for a richer golden crust.
