15 Mins Chinese Hot Oil Noodles Using Dumpling Wrappers 🍜

This recipe gives you all the flavours of authentic Chinese hot oil noodles (油泼面 you po mian) — but with a twist. Instead of handmade noodles, we’re using store-bought dumpling wrappers. They’re soft, chewy, and cook in minutes, soaking up all the garlicky, spicy, tangy sauce perfectly.

The magic is in the hot oil — once it hits the garlic and chili, you get that amazing sizzling aroma that instantly fills the kitchen.

It’s simple, spicy, and ridiculously satisfying — all made from ingredients you probably already have at home. Perfect for lazy days when you still want something delicious.

Ingredients

  • Dumpling wrappers
  • Minced garlic
  • Spring onion
  • Coriander
  • 1 tbsp hot oil (heat it right before pouring!)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • ½ tsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Instructions

1. Prep the “noodles”

Soak the dumpling wrappers in water for about 2 minutes to soften them up.

Once they’re soft, gently pull them apart.

2. Cook

Bring a pot of water to a boil and drizzle in a bit of oil. Toss in the wrappers and cook until they’re tender — it only takes about a minute or two!

Once done, give them a quick cold-water bath and drain well. This keeps your “noodles” nice and chewy with a lovely bounce.

3. Make the sauce

In a heatproof bowl, add “noodles”, salt, chilli powder, garlic, spring onion and coriander.

Heat up the oil until shimmering hot, then pour it over the aromatics — listen to that sizzle!

Finish with light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and vinegar.

4. Mix and serve

Toss everything together, and coat evenly with that gorgeous sauce. Serve immediately while it’s still warm and fragrant.

Extra Tips

1. Spicy boost

Sprinkle a pinch of chilli flakes or drizzle extra chilli oil on top

2. Filling & nutritious

Top with a soft-boiled or pan-fried egg, or even some blanched veggies for extra protein and balance.

3. Nutty touch

A small drizzle of sesame oil adds a warm, nutty aroma that ties everything together.

4. Crunch factor

Sprinkle fried shallots or crushed peanuts on top for texture and flavour contrast.

5. Flavour upgrade

Swap chilli powder for chilli crisp — it adds crunch, depth, and an irresistible aroma.
