15 Mins Crispy Air Fryer Tofu

Let’s be honest — tofu often gets a bad reputation for being plain or boring.
But once you make this Crispy Air Fryer Tofu, you’ll see how magical it can be.
This dish is all about contrast — golden, crunchy edges on the outside and soft, tender tofu on the inside. When paired with a fragrant, spicy sauce made from garlic, scallions, sesame seeds, and hot oil, it becomes incredibly addictive.
I grew up eating tofu in many different ways — braised, stir-fried, or in soups — but this crispy version might just be one of my favourites. It’s the kind of dish you crave when you want something savoury and satisfying, but without standing over a greasy frying pan. The air fryer does all the work — no deep frying, no splattering oil, and no mess.
You can make this as a snack, side dish, or even a light meal. The sauce is the real star here — it’s nutty, garlicky, spicy, and aromatic. When you pour that hot oil over the chilli and garlic, the smell instantly fills the kitchen — it’s warm, comforting, and mouthwatering.
This recipe takes only 15 minutes, and once you try it, I promise it’ll become one of your go-to easy dishes.

Ingredients
Main Ingredients:
- 200g medium-firm or firm tofu
- A small drizzle of oil or oil spray (optional, helps crisp the tofu)
Sauce:
- 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 2 tbsp chopped scallions (both white and green parts)
- 1 tsp white sesame seeds
- ½ tsp chilli powder (or adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp cumin powder
- ½ tsp Sichuan pepper powder (or black pepper)
- 1 tbsp hot oil
- 1 tsp light soy sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp water

Instructions
1. Prepare the Tofu
Start by draining your tofu.
This step might seem small, but it’s the key to getting that perfect crispy texture. Tofu contains a lot of water, and if you skip draining it, it’ll steam instead of crisping.
Gently pat the tofu dry with paper towels, or if you have time, wrap it in paper towels and place something heavy on top (like a plate or small pan) for 10–15 minutes to remove extra moisture.
Next, cut the tofu into cubes. Try to make them the same size so they cook evenly in the air fryer.
If you like your tofu extra crunchy, lightly brush or spray each piece with a little oil. This helps them get that golden crispness, just like deep frying — but without all the oil.
2. Air-Fry the Tofu
Place the tofu cubes inside the basket in a single layer and air fry at 180 degrees for 15 minutes.
Don’t stack or crowd them — air needs to circulate around each piece for even crisping.
At around the 7-minute mark, open the basket and give it a gentle shake to make sure all sides brown evenly.
By the time the timer goes off, the tofu should look golden brown and slightly puffed, with crispy edges that make a gentle crackle when you tap them.
❤️ Tip: If your tofu isn’t crisp enough after 15 minutes, add another 2–3 minutes. Air fryer models vary slightly, and firmer tofu tends to need just a touch longer.

3. Make the Sauce
While the tofu cooks, it’s the perfect time to make the sauce.
In a small heatproof bowl, add 2 cloves garlic minced, 2 tbsp chopped scallions, 1 tsp white sesame seeds, ½ tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp cumin powder and ½ tsp Sichuan pepper powder.
Now heat a tablespoon of oil in a small pan until it’s shimmering hot — you’ll know it’s ready when you dip a chopstick in and see small bubbles form instantly.
Carefully pour the hot oil over the mixture.
It will sizzle immediately — this sound is pure happiness. The heat from the oil releases all the aromas of the spices, garlic, and scallion. You’ll smell a rich, toasty, garlicky scent filling your kitchen.
Once the sizzling slows down, add 1 tsp light soy sauce, 1 tsp vinegar, 1 tsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil and 1 tbsp water.
Mix everything together until smooth and glossy.
Taste and adjust:
- If it’s too salty, add a splash of water.
- If you want more tang, add a few extra drops of vinegar.
- If you like it sweeter, add half a teaspoon of sugar.
❤️ Tip: This sauce also goes perfectly with dumplings, noodles, or even drizzled over rice. It’s so versatile that I sometimes double the recipe and keep it in the fridge for a few days.

4. Combine and Serve
When the tofu is ready, transfer it to a large mixing bowl. You’ll notice how crisp it feels as you toss it — the outer layer slightly firm, with a soft, fluffy center.
You can serve this dish in two ways:
- Pour the sauce over the tofu and toss everything together, letting the tofu soak up all those bold flavours — this gives you a saucy, flavour-packed version.
- Keep the tofu and sauce separate, and dip each piece right before eating if you prefer to keep the tofu’s crispiness.
Both ways are delicious — it just depends on your mood.
Finish by sprinkling a few more chopped scallions or sesame seeds on top for extra aroma and a pop of colour.
And that’s it — your crispy air fryer tofu is done! It’s crunchy, savoury, spicy, and completely satisfying.

Extra Tips
1. Choose the Right Tofu
Firm or medium-firm tofu holds its shape better. Avoid silken tofu — it’s too soft for air frying and will fall apart.
2. Drain Well
The dryer your tofu, the crispier it’ll get.
3. Oil Matters
A small drizzle helps achieve a golden crust — but don’t overdo it; too much oil will make it heavy.
4. Don’t Skip the Hot Oil Step
Pouring hot oil over the aromatics releases their full fragrance — this is what makes the sauce restaurant-worthy.
5. Make It Spicier
Add a few dried red chillies or chilli flakes to the hot oil if you love extra heat.
6. Make It Vegan
swap oyster sauce for mushroom sauce or vegetarian stir-fry sauce.
7. Reheat Tip
If you have leftovers, reheat the tofu in the air fryer at 180°C for 3–4 minutes to make it crispy again.

This crispy air fryer tofu is proof that tofu doesn’t have to be boring. The texture is amazing — crispy on the outside, soft inside. The sauce is bold, aromatic, and addictive.
It’s one of those recipes you’ll find yourself making again and again — because it’s easy, fast, and delicious every single time. Perfect for lazy days when you want something tasty but effortless.
Serve it as a snack with your favourite drink, pair it with rice for dinner, or even tuck it into a wrap — it just works.
